2003 GMC Savana 3500 Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on a 4L60-E/4L65-E transmission on 2003 GMC Savana 3500?
A: Vehicle maintenance to replace a 4l60-e/4l65-e transmission park/neutral position switch begins by activating the parking brake and setting the transmission gear to neutral. Start by raising the vehicle and eliminate the nut supporting the transmission control lever to the manual shaft before removing this lever. Electric connectors disconnect from the switch while you uninstall the bolts which hold the park/neutral position switch in place against the transmission. Then remove the switch from the manual shaft. You must file down the manual shaft's exterior edge because it fails to slide off by itself. The switch hub flat needs alignment with manual shaft flats before sliding the switch onto the manual shaft until its mounting bracket reaches the transmission's mounting bosses. New switches arrive with built-in positive assurance brackets which eliminate the need for the neutral position adjustment tool. Position the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) to the switch while the bolts remain finger tight. Ensure the slots on the switch match the tool's tabs. Edge the tool until the top pin identifier matches the switch slot before tightening the bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). After removing the tool you must also discard the positive assurance bracket. After reconnecting electrical cables to the switch install the transmission control lever while securing it with a 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque setting. Complete the vehicle-lowering check while verifying the switch works properly by starting the engine only when in p (Park) and n (Neutral) gear positions. Replace the switch when it fails to operate correctly.
