2004 Cadillac XLR Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2004 Cadillac XLR?
A: Firstetler bears the task to remove the Brake Master Cylinder from the vehicle before fixing the mounting flange into a bench vise for access to the primary Piston's rear surface. Clean the reservoir cap area before removing both the cap and diaphragm while inspecting these parts for damage such as cuts or cracks or nicks or deformation that requires replacement. Seize the master cylinder reservoir and then use a smooth tool with round ends to apply pressure to the primary Piston before extracting the Piston retainer and primary Piston unit. Apply low pressure filtered air to the front outlet port while closing other cylinder inlet and rear outlet ports to remove the secondary Piston and its primary and secondary seals along with the return spring. Toss out all components of the primary Piston assembly, piston retainer, as well as the secondary Piston seals. Use denatured alcohol to clean the interior and exterior of master cylinder and secondary Piston along with return spring. Check for any sign of damage like cracks, scoring, pitting or corrosion then replace master cylinder if any issues detected. After cleaning each component with non-lubricated filtered air apply delco supreme 11 (R) (GM P/N 12377967, Canadian P/N 992667) brake fluid or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from a clean sealed container to lubricate all overhaul components and master cylinder bore and secondary Piston and return spring. You should slide the new primary seal with retainer alongside the new secondary seal onto the secondary Piston before installing the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly inside the cylinder bore and after inserting the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Use a round-pointed tool to push down the primary Piston before installing the new Piston retainer. Reinstall the master cylinder reservoir and its covering cap and diaphragm before reinstalling the master cylinder to the vehicle.
