2004 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the LH secondary camshaft timing chain on 2004 Cadillac XLR?
A: Start with removing the right secondary Timing Chain to replace the left secondary Timing Chain. Perform twisting of the crankshaft using the crankshaft socket, (J 39946) so that primary timing gear alignment marks are near. Next - get rid of the left Camshaft position actuator housing and do not disconnect the actuator solenoids. Mount the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328) to the left camshafts (Bank 2). Loose and remove the left secondary Timing Chain tensioners and bolts. Use an open-end wrench on the hex casted into the Camshaft to prevent it from spinning in removing the bank 2 (left) exhaust Camshaft position oil control valve then remove the left exhaust Camshaft position actuator and unplugging the secondary Timing Chain from the actuator teeth. Repeat in process for the bank 2 (left) intake Camshaft position oil control valve and actuator. Take off the left secondary Timing Chain from the engine, clean and check Camshaft timing-drive components. While putting on the new secondary Timing Chain, position the three black on the corresponding timing marks on the bank 2 exhaust actuator, the bank 2 intake actuator, and the intermediate sprocket. Assemble the secondary Timing Chain to the intermediate sprocket with the sprocket lb timing mark aligning to the Timing Chain black link. Mount the lb intake Camshaft position actuator with the timing mark parallel from the cylinder head deck surface and loosely attach the oil control valve and create a torque of 120 nm (89 ft. Lbs) while the Camshaft is stationary. Repeat this for the lb exhaust Camshaft position actuator. Lastly, install the left secondary Timing Chain Tensioner, right secondary Timing Chain, take off the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328), then install the left Camshaft position actuator housing.
