2005 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the RH secondary camshaft timing chain on 2005 Cadillac XLR?
A: Users must remove the Oil Pump before beginning right Timing Chain replacement. Use crankshaft socket (J 39946) to turn the crankshaft so the primary timing marks touch each other. Disconnect the right Camshaft position actuator housing but leave the actuator solenoids intact. The use of the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328) on bank 1 camshafts requires special caution because of potential hazards. To replace the right Timing Chain Tensioner open an impact wrench to the hex-shaped Camshaft and use it to stop its rotation as you remove the Camshaft oil control valve. Remove the bank 1 exhaust Camshaft position oil control valve while sliding the right intake Camshaft position actuator off the valve to extract the Timing Chain from its teeth. The intake Camshaft position oil control valve from bank 1 is then replaced along with the right exhaust Camshaft position actuator. Remove the right Timing Chain from your engine then clean and check the Camshaft timing drive components. The three black links of the new Timing Chain need to match up with precise timing marks on both the bank 1 exhaust actuator and bank 1 intake actuator along with the intermediate sprocket. Connect the Timing Chain to the intermediate sprocket so its black link matches up with the sprocket timing mark. Set up the intake actuator so its timing mark faces directly against the cylinder head deck before loosely installing and torque tightening the oil control valve up to 120 nm (89 ft. Lbs.) while holding the Camshaft in place. The exhaust actuator receives the same installation procedure alongside its oil control valve. To finish the right Timing Chain Tensioner installation, remove the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328) before installing the right Camshaft position actuator housing and then mount the Oil Pump.
