• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2005 Cadillac XLR?

  A: The cooling system needs draining before accessing the Thermostat Housing by removing the air outlet duct from the front of the engine. The hose clamp pliers (J 38185) will help you separate the Thermostat Housing from the heater hose before you remove the coolant Radiator Hose. Start by taking off the Drive Belt tensioner followed by removing the accessory Drive Belt and Drive Belt idler pulley after unscrewing its bolt. Start by removing the Water Pump Pulley then support the vehicle with stands and finally detach the crankshaft balancer. Disassemble the front engine cover bolts before removing the piece while getting rid of the previous gasket. Clean and inspect the engine front cover first then apply a small amount of gm p/n 12578521 sealant (Canadian P/N 88901148) at both the split line where the upper and lower crankcases meet and at the block face top. Position the new engine front cover gasket over the crankcase dowel pins then carefully slot the engine front cover into its appropriate position. Construct the engine front cover bolt threads with thread locking compound gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) before you screw in the bolts and enforce their tightening to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) according to the defined sequence. Install the crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump Pulley by tightening the pulley bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Next, install the Drive Belt idler pulley and its bolt, tightening it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.)the accessory Drive Belt and Drive Belt tensioner installation occurs after the front cover bolts reach their specified torque of 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). Reconnect the coolant Radiator Hose and heater hose with hose clamp pliers (J 38185) before installing the air outlet duct and filling the cooling system.
