Timing Chain

To replace the oem timing chain and sprockets, begin by removing the Oil Pump. Tie up the primary timing marks with the help of the j 39946 (Crankshaft Socket - 4.0L and 4.6L). Next, the secondary timing chains are to be removed at both the right and left sides. Then, remove the primary timing chain tensioner and the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt. Take off the main timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft midpoint sprocket as a single unit. Cleaning and inspection of the camshaft timing drive components. For installation, bring the timing marks of the camshaft intermediate and crankshaft sprockets vertically. Mount the timing chain for the main camshaft to the drive sprockets in such a way the 1st piston is going to be at the top dead-center while the crankshaft keyway is at the 1 o'clock position. Align the crankshaft key to the drive sprocket using the j 39946, then assemble the primary timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and the camshaft intermediate sprocket. To make the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt tight to 60 nm (44 lb ft). It is not until after the secondary timing chains are installed that the pin in which holds the tensioner ought to be removed. Mount the main drive tensioner chain and back the secondary timing chains on both sides. Make sure that the number one piston is at top dead center (TDC) and the crankshaft pin is at the 1 o'clock position using the j 39946 (Crankshaft Socket) to rotate the strap as needed. In an assembly, install the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and a camshaft intermediate sprocket then bolt the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt to 60 nm (44 lb ft). Mount the timing chain guide and its bolts and tighten torquing to 25 nm (18 lb ft). Then fit the timing chain tensioner, the oil outlet tube with the bolts tightened to 10 nm (89 lb in) and the secondary timing chains. Pull out the pin from the timing chain tensioner release lever, straighten the primary marking vertically, and finally, bolt the crankshaft sprocket to Oil Pump drive friction washer with an outer diameter of 62.0mm (2.4410mm) and an inner diameter 45.25mm (1.7815 in) before re shall junction of the pump.

To replace the right Timing Chain, one needs first to remove the Oil Pump. With the help of the crankshaft socket (J 39946), turn the crankshaft to align the primary timing gear marks. Then disassemble the right Camshaft position actuator housing without separating the actuator solenoids. Mount the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328) on the bank 1 (right) cam shafts. Services and tighten the lower right Timing Chain Tensioner bolt to 28 foot pounds and remove the tensioner. Closeoperation wrench on the hex cast into the Camshaft so that it can't rotate while removing the bank 1 (right) exhaust Camshaft position oil control valve (slide the right exhaust Camshaft position actuator off and remove the Timing Chain from the actuator teeth). Repeat the procedure for the continental intake Camshaft position oil control valve and actuator. (Bank 1 or right). Take out the right Timing Chain from the engine and then clean and check the Camshaft timing drive components. While installing the new Timing Chain, join the three black links with the correct points of timing on the bank 1 exhaust and intake actuators, as well as intermediate sprocket. Loosely insert the oil control valves to secure the actuators and tighten them to 120nm (89lb ft) using an open-end wrench not to allow the Camshaft rotation. Install the correct Timing Chain Tensioner, pull out the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328), and plug back in the right Camshaft position actuator housing and Oil Pump.

Tighten the tensioner bolts to 21 Nm (15 lb ft).

Tighten its bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).

Draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft using the mounting bolts and tighten them to 16 Nm (12 lb ft).

A light blow on the lower edge with a plastic mallet may help dislodge it.

Turn the crankshaft to position the number one piston at top dead center and adjust the camshaft so that the timing mark is straight down with the sprocket temporarily installed.

Tighten both the upper and lower left secondary camshaft drive chain guide bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft.

Gather the necessary tools, including the Camshaft Holding Tool (J 44212).

Take the chain out of the engine.

Take out the primary camshaft drive chain guide bolts and guide, followed by the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt.

Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe and guide.

Take out the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.

The Camshaft Holding Tool (J 44212).

Ensure the primary timing marks are aligned vertically and install the oil pump.

Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner (part number: 12345), the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe (part number: 12346), the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide (part number: 12347), and the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain (part number: 12348).

Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain itself.

Remove the mechanics wire supporting the right secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.

Slide the left exhaust camshaft position actuator off the camshaft and detach the secondary timing chain from the actuator teeth.

Slide it off the camshaft and detach the secondary timing chain from the actuator teeth.

Install the intake actuator with its timing mark perpendicular to the cylinder head deck surface.

Clean and inspect the camshaft timing drive components.

Slide the chain down through the left cylinder head and place it on the left exhaust camshaft sprocket, routing it around the inner row of the camshaft intermediate drive shaft sprocket teeth.

Remove the left camshaft position actuator housing without detaching the actuator solenoids.

Start with the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain.

Remove the engine front cover.

Loosen and remove the left secondary timing chain tensioner bolts and tensioner.

Repeat the process for the Bank 2 (left) intake camshaft position oil control valve and actuator.

Using the Crankshaft Socket (J 39946), rotate the crankshaft until the primary timing gear marks are adjacent.

Use an open end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft to prevent rotation while tightening the bolt to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).

Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide (Guide).

Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe, the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide, and the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
