2008 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the LH secondary camshaft timing chain on 2008 Cadillac XLR?
A: In order to replace the left Timing Chain the first thing you will have to do is to remove the right Timing Chain. With the help of the crankshaft socket (J 39946), rotate the crankshaft so that the marks on the primary timing gear are next to each other. Then, withdraw the left Camshaft position actuator housing without breaking the actuator solenoids. Place the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328) on the bank 2 (left) camshafts. Loosen and remove tensioner bolts and its left Timing Chain Tensioner. With the hex on bank 2 (left) exhaust Camshaft, punch out the Camshaft with an open wrench so it cannot turn unassisted and remove bank o (left) exhaust Camshaft position oil control valve. Move the left exhaust Camshaft position actuator along with the Timing Chain off the actuator teeth. Repeat the same for bank 2 (left) intake Camshaft position oil control valve and actuator. Snap out the left Timing Chain from the engine and inspect and clean the Camshaft timing drive pieces. When replacing the new Timing Chain, align the three black links with the appropriate timing signs on the bank 2 exhaust and intake actuators, in addition to the intermediate sprocket. Loosely install the oil control valves to secure the actuators, and be sure to use an open-end wrench to avoid Camshaft rotation during its tightening of 120 n.m (89 lb ft). Lastly, insert the left Timing Chain Tensioner, the right Timing Chain, and remove the Camshaft holding tool (EN 46328), and place the left Camshaft position actuator housing.
