2006 Buick Lucerne Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2006 Buick Lucerne?
A: To replace the Timing Chain and sprockets, starting with the collection of necessary tools: torque angle meter (J45059). Start by taking out the engine front cover and bringing the timing marks on the sprockets as close together as possible. Relieve the bolt securing the Timing Chain dampener and remove the Timing Chain dampener. After that, unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolt, and later on the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. If it does not come off easily then a light tap on the lower edge with a piece of plastic mallet may help get it off. Go ahead and take the crankshaft sprocket off, and if necessary, the balance shaft drive gear in order to reach the camshaft thrust plate. Take off the camshaft thrust plate bolts and the thrust plate on one side and the driven gear bolt and gear on the other if the balance shaft is involved. Visit all the components and clean and inspect them for wear or damage. If the pistons have been moved, rotate the crankshaft for the number one piston to be at the top dead center and the camshaft that the timing mark is directly downward with sprocket temporarily installed. For installation, in case of need, install the balance shaft driven gear and stop the balance shaft from spinning during the installation of the driven gear, bolt, tightening it at 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.) + 70 at the torque angle meter (J45059). The camshaft thrust plate and its bolts must be installed and tightened to 15 nm (11ft. Lbs.) and the balance shaft drive gear. Position the timing marks of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear and then fit the crankshaft sprocket. Mount the Timing Chain on the sprockets such that the timing marks are the closest possible and use the camshaft sprocket bolt with the bolt tightening of 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) + 90 degrees using the torque angle meter (J45059). Finally, install the Timing Chain dampener and tighten its bolt to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.), turn the engine for two revolutions to verify the alignment of the timing marks, and install the engine front cover.
