  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal Replacement on 2004 Chevrolet Classic?
    A: The tools required for servicing and repairing the constant velocity joint boot, in particular, for the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement, are: j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers, j 35566 drive axle seal clamp pliers and j 8059 snap ring pliers-parllel jaw. Start by removing the small seal retaining clamp from the corner of the halfshaft bar using the side cutter and throw it away. Perform with a side cutter trots the greater seal retaining clamp through the tripot joint out and cast it away. Remove halfshaft inboard seal from the tri-lobal tripot bushing on the large diameter and slide seal away from the joint along the halfshaft bar. Remove the tripot from the spider and the halfshath bar. Spread the spacer ring with j 8059 and then slip the spacer ring and tripot joint spider back on the halfshaft bar. Using j 8059 remove spacer ring from the groove and the halfshaft bar and slip tripot joint spider assembly from the halfshaft bar, using brass hammer if need be. Clean the tripot balls, needle rollers and house with cleaning solvent but without any remnants of old grease and pollution, all parts dry. Take off the tri-lobal tripot bushing from the housing and also spacer ring and seal from the halfshaft bar. Check the halfshaft inboard seal, tripot joint spider assembly, housing, tri-lobal tripot bushing, tripot balls, and needle rollers for wear and damage. For assembly, attach the small seal the retaining clamp to the neck of the halfshaft inboard seal without crimping, and then install the half shaft bar side of the inboard seal for the seal by sliding it onto the halfshaft bar. Fit the neck of the inboard seal into the seal groove of the halfshaft bar and crimp the seal retaining clamp to 35910 j 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs) of using j 35910. Put on the spacer ring on the half shaft bar into the second groove, please slide the tripot joint spider assembly to the spacer ring until it can not move any further on the half shaft bar using a brass hammer is necessary. Mount the spacer ring to the groove of the halfshaft, install j 8059, apply about half of the grease from the service kit into the inboard seal, and the rest repack the housing. Mount the tri-lobal tripot bushing into the housing, flush fit the face of the housing. Position the larger new clamp on the inboard seal then slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly on the halfshaft bar and then slide the large diameter of inboard seal over the outside of the tri-lobal tripot bushing with the lip of the seal in the groove. Check to ensure that the halfshaft inboard seal is not dimpled, stretched, or out of shape; if needed, shape the seal evenly using a thin flat blunt tool by hand. Place the joint assembly to the correct vehicle dimension (dimension a=105mm (4 1-8 in.)), align the halfshaft inboard seal, housing, and large clamp with latching. Finally, latch the seal retaining clamp with j 35566.
