2005 Chevrolet Classic CV Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Seal Replacement on 2005 Chevrolet Classic?
A: To service and repair the constant velocity joint boot, specifically in relation to the task of changing the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal, the following list of tools is needed: a typical tire shop may hold these tools, which were extraordinarily heavy-duty from mileage and harsh working conditions. It can be inferred that these tools were used on a great number of heavy-duty and ordinary vehicles with similar capacities, based on the use of the tools listed above. Start by cutting off the big seal retaining clamp of the CV Joint with a side cutter and get rid of it, then cut off the small one of the halfshaft bar. In order to accomplish this, you should loosen the seal from the outer race of the CV Joint and slide it off the joint along bar. Wipe off the grease from the CV Joint inner race and, while holding the ears of the race retaining ring with the snap ring pliers (J8059), spread the ears on the ring before removing the CV Joint assembly from the bar. Remove the bar's seal, and lightly tap the CV Joint cage with a brass drift and hammer for getting rid of all six chrome alloy balls . Rotate the CV Joint cage and inner race 90-degree angle with the CV Joint outer race while aligning the windows with the lands of the CV Joint outer race. Take the CV Joint cage and inner race from the outer race, then rotate the inner race 90 degrees where with it will be aligned with the cage and then pivoted into cage window for removal. Clean carefully all parts to the solvent, making sure that there is no excess old grease and contaminants on them, and dried. For assembly-secure the new seal retaining clamp to the seal neck without crimping; slide the seal onto the halfshaft bar and align it; into the seal groove. Use the drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910), a breaker bar, and a torque wrench to crimp the seal retaining clamp tightly at 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.) while corroborating the gap dimension. Apply a light coat of grease from the service kit onto both races ball grooves pausing the inner race with a 90 angle cage ,may insert into it. Make sure that the side of the retaining ring of the inner race faces the halfshaft bar and then insert into this cage the inner race in the outer race. Put in the first chrome ball and follow through until six balls are in. Pack the CV Joint with grease, force the CV Joint onto the bar until the retaining ring get seated, and make sure that the seal is well shaped. Slide the large diameter of the seal over CV Joint outer race and guide it into groove with the seal lip. Lastly, crimp the seal retaining clamp with the drive axle seal clamp plier (J35910), breaker bar and torque wrench and it should have been tightened to torque of 176nm (130 ft. Lbs) checking the gap dimension to the value of 1.90mm (1/16 inch).
