2004 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter on 2004 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The repair of automatic transmission fluid filter requires correct positioning and support for the vehicle prior to all work procedures. Set the vehicle on a hoist then position a drain pan underneath the Oil Pan of the transaxle. You should start by loosening all Oil Pan bolts located at the front and sides before slowing down the rear bolts until they reach approximately four turns. Gently open the Oil Pan with care while protecting both the transaxle case and sealing surfaces and use a rubber mallet for a light tap to enable the oil drainage. Check the oil fluid color after removing the air and then proceed to loosen all Oil Pan bolts and extract the Oil Pan Gasket together with the Oil Pan. First remove the oil level control valve then extract the Oil Filter with the o-ring seal while being cautious not to damage the transaxle case during the removal of the filter neck seal. Use a chisel to make small indentations on top of the filter neck seal for relaxation before you remove it and completely clean all remaining gasket material. The transaxle case and Oil Pan Gasket surfaces need solvent application before they air dry entirely. Petroleum jelly serves as an installation lubricant since other greases can modify the fluid characteristics. Add the filter neck seal through a large socket or two mallets before applying petroleum jelly to the new filter o-ring seal and inserting the filter into position by directing pressure on the oil level control valve's center to avoid damage. First install the oil level control valve before you position the Oil Pan Gasket together with the pan and manually start the bolts before applying torque to 12 nm (9 ft. Lbs.). Add dexron-iii p/n 21019223 equivalent oil of specified capacity to the transaxle after lowering the vehicle. Bottom pan removal requires 6.5 liters (6.9 quarts) of oil but complete overhauls need 9 liters (9.5 quarts) while dry capacity requires 12.2 liters (12.9 quarts). Begin the engine while warming the transaxle and verify that no leaks occur by checking the fluid is at the correct level.
