2005 Chevrolet Malibu Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and seal on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Vehicle support begins by ensuring the right stance followed by hoisting it while positioning a drain pan under the transaxle oil pan. The bolts on both sides and front of the oil pan must be removed while giving the bolts on the rear a four-turn loosening. Thoroughly pry the oil pan while protecting the transaxle case and sealing surfaces before using a rubber mallet to drain the oil. First remove the air then check the fluid color before taking out all remaining oil pan bolts and the Oil Pan Gasket with the oil pan. Continue with the removal of the oil level control valve and after that remove the Oil Filter together with its o-ring seal while taking care to protect the transaxle case from harm as you remove the filter neck seal. Use a chisel to sink the filter neck seal's top portion to break the tight fit before discarding it and cleaning every remaining old gasket material off. Use solvent to clean all surfaces of both the transaxle case and Oil Pan Gasket before allowing drying in the open air. To install the components users should apply petroleum jelly and utilize a large socket or mallets for the new filter neck seal installation while applying petroleum jelly to the new filter o-ring before setting the filter into the case by pushing the oil level control valve directly to avoid damage. The next step includes installation of the oil level control valve followed by position of the Oil Pan Gasket and oil pan. Then start the oil pan bolts by hand before final torque applications reach 12 nm (9 ft. Lbs.). Fill the transaxle with dexron (R) iii p/n 21019223 or equivalent oil to reach a capacity of 6.5 l (6.9 qt.) during bottom pan removal and 9 l (9.5 qt.) during complete overhaul and 12.2 l (12.9 qt.) when operating without fluid. The engine must be started while warming the transaxle until the fluid level reaches the correct mark. It is essential to check for leaks during this procedure.
