2004 Chevrolet S10 Tie Rod Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a tie rod on 2004 Chevrolet S10?
A: The first step to replace a Tie Rod requires the car to go through vehicle support using safety stands. The first step includes removing the cotter pin from the outer Tie Rod ball stud nut before proceeding with removal of the outer and inner Tie Rod ball stud nuts. A wedge must be driven between the joint and attached part to keep seals safe and prevent joint disconnect during replacement. The j24319-b steering linkage and Tie Rod puller should be used to take out the outer Tie Rod ball stud from the steering knuckle and the j6627-a Tie Rod puller to extract the inner Tie Rod ball stud from the relay rod. The Tie Rod ends can be taken off the adjuster tube after unscrewing the assemblies while loosening the clamp bolts. Examine the Tie Rod ends together with seals and threads and adjuster tube for any signs of damage and excessive wear. Thorough cleaning applies to the ball stud threads along with ball stud nut and tapered surfaces. The lubrication should include chassis lubricant application to the Tie Rod ends with an adjustment requirement of thread equality within three threads on both inner and outer Tie Rod ends. Fitting the adjuster tube with the Tie Rod ends should be the first step followed by mounting the inner Tie Rod ball stud onto the relay rod with the seal in position then putting on new nut and tightening it to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Install the outer Tie Rod ball stud onto the steering knuckle after placing the proper seal on the stud. Fasten the nut securely to reach 53 nm (39 ft. Lbs.) then advance the nut to line up with the cotter pin hole while proceeding to install a new pin. Use a new cotter pin which you install before lowering the vehicle after spreading its ends. Screw the front toe adjuster while positioning two clamps next to the dimples found at adjuster tube ends. Keep the clamp slots from aligning with the adjuster tube slot. Secure each Tie Rod End position while tightening the clamps per specifications while letting the ends touch if required before installing and fastening the adjuster tube clamp bolts to 21 nm (16 ft. Lbs.).
