  • Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold on a 4.3L engine on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
    A: Begin by supporting the vehicle during elevation before you disconnect the Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts and lay down the car. Remove the Spark Plug wire retainer bolts after disconnecting the wires from spark plugs while positioning the wire harness on engine top. Begin the left Exhaust Manifold replacement process by disassembling the spark plugs while removing the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector. After removing the Exhaust Manifold and Spark Plug wire shields bolts/stud, proceed to take off the shields and discard the old Exhaust Manifold gaskets. Before cleaning you should remove the Exhaust Manifold heat shield bolts then shield and clean all gasket mating surfaces. Fasten the Exhaust Manifold heat shield to its position using bolts which need to be tightened at 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). New Exhaust Manifold gaskets must be used with the gasket tabs securing both bolts and gaskets before installing the Exhaust Manifold as well as plug wire shields. The threads of Exhaust Manifold bolts/stud must receive threadlock gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) before torque is set to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). First connect the ect sensor electrical connector and tighten the spark plugs up to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). Place the wire harness back to the engine position then install the Spark Plug wire retainer bolts at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) while connecting the wires to the spark plugs. Finish by raising the vehicle after which you should install the Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts then tighten them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) at each connection before lowering the vehicle.
