2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: Start Oil Pan replacement by removing bottom A/C Compressor bolts then releasing top bolts (2, 3) before removing the oil level indicator with tube. Start by jacking up the vehicle then uninstall both front tires and wheels and all mounting bolts from the engine protection shield. Drain the shield from its position and set it aside for installation later. Start by removing these successive parts: front steering gear crossmember and the left and right wheel drive shafts and finally the front drive axle clutch fork assembly. You must disconnect the prop shaft from the front axle pinion yoke before draining oil through the Oil Pan Drain Plug. Start by unclipping transmission cooler lines from the engine block followed by removing front Differential bolts before setting it aside. Begin by extracting the 4 transmission bell housing bolts which connect to the Oil Pan and continue by removing additional Oil Pan bolts. Tighten two Oil Pan bolts inside jack screws to remove the pan from engine before cleaning and inspecting the Oil Pan surface. Apply a 3 mm (0.12 inch) gm pn 12378521 sealer bead onto the block's surface before installing the Oil Pan within a 10-minute time frame. Install Oil Pan bolts starting with side bolts at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque and end bolts at 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) torque. Check alignment by placing a straight edge along the block's back and Oil Pan's transmission mounting surface. After the Oil Pan clears the Oil Pump and screen assembly, tighten up the bolts. The Oil Pan side bolts must be torqued to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and end bolts adjusted to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Next, install 4 transmission bell housing bolts and torque them to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the A/C Compressor bottom bolts with a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before tightening all four bolts to this same torque value. Following this installation, tighten the front Differential bolts to 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.). Put the front drive axle clutch fork assembly back in place afterward securing the transmission cooler lines to the block and joining the prop shaft to the front Differential and installing the steering gear crossmember. Secure the left and right wheel drive shafts before installing the Oil Pan Drain Plug secured at 26 nm (19 ft. Lbs.). Attach the bolts to the engine protection shield at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque before reinstalling the front wheels and lowering the vehicle. An engine inspection must be conducted to check for oil leaks while also performing oil service on the engine.
