2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the valve rocker arm and valve lash adjuster on 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: You need to start the repair process by taking out the Camshaft cover together with both exhaust and intake sprocket bolts. Set the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) on the Cylinder Head with its horizontal bolts inserted into the sprockets to retain chain tension during these operations which protect the Timing Chain elements. Lifting the sprockets off the camshafts with the Timing Chain requires you to place the Camshaft caps in a rack until their proper installation. Begin by taking out the Camshaft caps bolts before removing the Camshaft caps and finally the Camshaft units. After removal follow a systematic arrangement of the valve rocker arms and valve lash adjusters so they can be re-installed back to their original locations. Keep valve rocker arms and valve lash adjusters aside then apply engine oil to both components before returning them to their original positions. The next step requires valve Rocker Arm roller lubrication before adding the valve rocker arms into place then coating the Camshaft journals with engine oil followed by Camshaft installation. The Camshaft caps go back onto their original journals before torquing the Camshaft cap bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Proceed with repositioning the Camshaft sprockets onto their camshafts then extract the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222). Because of the space limitations, install the intake Camshaft sprocket washer and bolt in addition to the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt. Begin by tightening the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs) during the initial stage then complete the procedure by tightening it to an additional 100° using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A). While performing the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt tightening process, initiate with 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs) followed by an additional 135° reading with the torque angle meter (J 36660-A). Tighten the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) at the initial stage and complete it with 135° of additional rotation using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A). Finally, install the Camshaft cover.
