2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Valve Stem Oil Seal on 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: Collect these important tools for the Valve Stem Oil Seal repair: valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820), camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222), and valve spring compressor (J 44228). Begin by unscrewing both cam cover and spark plugs before taking off the sprocket bolts from exhaust and intake. Because the timing chain components need to stay undisturbed install the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) onto the Cylinder Head followed by setting two bolts in each Camshaft sprocket. Separate the sprocket units with their timing chains from the camshafts and unscrew the Camshaft cap bolts to prepare the fittings for installation later. Take off the Camshaft caps and camshafts before applying air pressure through a proper adapter at the cylinder. Press the valve using valve spring compressor j 44228 and remove the valve keys plus compressor. Use the valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820) to remove seals and valve spring retainer along with valve. Begin installation work after you check and clean the Cylinder Head parts. Before installing new parts, place petroleum-free oil on valve stems and handle Valve Stem Oil Seal installation using j 38820 equipment. Depress the valve springs once more using valve spring compressor (J 44228) while installing valve keys and removing the compressor. Inject oil into the Camshaft areas then place the camshafts back where they belong. Spot the Camshaft caps into their places and tighten each bolt to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Set the Camshaft sprockets on their places over the camshafts before removing the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222). Fasten the intake bolt to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) in the first stage followed by the two-stage torque wrench (J 36660-A) torque setting for 100° to assemble the intake Camshaft components. Upon completion, tighten the exhaust bolt with the first torque setting of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before performing a second torque sequence of 135° using the torque wrench (J 36660-A). Begin by fastening the exhaust bolt to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) with a single turn. Then make a final additional 135° move with the torque wrench (J 36660-A). Reinsert all spark plugs and put back the Camshaft cover into place.
