Valve Seals

These tools are needed for Valve Stem Oil Seal service and Valve Stem Oil Seal replacement together with valve spring changing: Spark Plug port adapter (J 23590), valve spring compressor (J 38606), and valve stem seal installer (J 42863). Start by spinning the engine to place the piston at top dead center in the cylinder before servicing to avoid dropping the valve within. Pull both valve rocker arms and push rods first and then remove the spark plugs. Connect the Spark Plug port adapter j 23590 to the Spark Plug port and use compressed air to hold the valves in position. Use the valve spring compressor (J 38606) to hold down the valve spring then install it. First remove all valve locks then push out valve spring and cap before taking out the Valve Stem Oil Seal. Apply light hand pressure to set the new Valve Stem Oil Seal properly onto the valve guide. Set the oil seal onto the valve guide before using the valve stem seal installer (J 42863) to locate the Valve Stem Oil Seal properly. Use the valve spring compressor once more to put back the valve spring on the tool. Inset the valve spring and cap then position the valve locks in their right places. Take off air pressure and the Spark Plug port adapter (J 23590) while letting go of the valve spring. Put the spark plugs back into position and connect both the valve rocker arms and the push rod(s).

First lift the vehicle and then take away both right side camshafts before starting the valve stem oil seal and valve spring replacement. Start by taking out both parts between the Oil Pan and transaxle case before handling the torque converter cover. Use the j 44214 and lower the vehicle onto the ground. First clean the Spark Plug recess before taking out the Spark Plug from the selected cylinder. Insert the base plate of j 44211 through the Spark Plug hole and position the j 39313 carefully. Hold the valve closed by keeping steady air pressure on the tool. Push the arm of j 44211 down with the swivel nut attached to open the valve path towards the outlet. Put on a magnet to extract valve locks from the engine while you loosen the swivel nut with your fingers and swing the arm aside to take off the valve parts. Insert the j 38820 tool to grip and take out the old valve stem seal before inspecting the valve spring. Put clean engine oil on the valve stem and new seal before putting on the j 38820 seal protector because j 38820 will set the new valve stem seal in place. Push the arm back over the valve parts before tightening the swivel nut just enough to access the valve locks. Apply the j 43059 to install valve locks and then remove the swivel nut and arm from each valve that needs servicing. Lower the air pressure and remove the j39313 from the Spark Plug opening. Remove also the base plate that comes with the j44211 system. Rephrase the steps by first placing the Spark Plug in and second by repeating the entire process on other cylinders. After putting back the right camshafts lift the car once more then uninstall the j 44214 part to add the converter housing and screw down the Oil Pan to transaxle holder with 50 nm force (37 lb ft) before bringing the vehicle down.

You need the following tools to replace valve stem oil seal and valve spring: j 38820 valve stem seal remover & installer, j 39313 Spark Plug port adapter, j 43059 valve keeper installer, j 44211 valve spring compressor, and j 44214 flywheel holder. Take out the Camshaft cover plus both camshafts before lifting and suspending the vehicle. Disconnect the oil pan-to-transaxle case brace, and then remove the torque converter cover. Lower the vehicle using the j 44214 (Flywheel Holder). Set the j 44211 valve spring compressor baseplate into the Spark Plug hole space on the serviced cylinder. Fix the j39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter) into the Spark Plug hole and maintain continuous air pressure to block the valve. Place upon the valve stud both arms and the swivel nut from j 44211 (Valve Spring Compressor) while keeping the swivel nut loosely tightened to access valve locks. Use a magnet to take out the valve locks before loosening the swivel nut to turn and pull away the arm of the j 44211 valve spring compressor. Use the j 38820 valve stem seal remover & installer tool to grip and take out the aged valve stem seal. Clean the valve stem and apply oil to both its surface and the inside diameter of the new seal before using the j 38820 tool to put the valve stem seal into place. Snap in the valve spring retainer and spring and lower the j 44211 (Valve Spring Compressor) swivel nut and arm to work with the valve locks. Insert the area valve locks through the j 43059 valve keeper installer before taking off the j 44211 valve spring compressor swivel nut and arm to do the rest of the valves. End valve work by letting off the air pressure then you can take out the j 39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter) and base plate of the j 44211 (Valve Spring Compressor). Put the new spark plugs onto their locations before positioning the camshafts and Camshaft cover underneath the vehicle. Set a lift to take out the j 44214 (Flywheel Holder). Afterward fit the torque converter cover onto the Oil Pan which connects to the transaxle brace. Secure screws to a torque of 50 nm and 37 ft. Lbs. And return the vehicle to ground level.

Place the essential tools j 38820, j 39313, j 43059, j 44211, j 44214 on the table to service the Valve Stem Oil Seal of the left side. Start by taking out the left camshafts and mount the vehicle properly. Disconnect the Oil Pan from the transaxle case before taking out the torque converter cover. Install the j 44214 tool and decrease the height of the vehicle. Taking proper Spark Plug removal steps helps you keep the engine parts clean when servicing the target cylinder for this task. Set the j 44211 base plate over the Spark Plug hole first before adding the j 39313 and keeping the valve closed using constant air pressure. Insert the arm and swivel nut of j 44211 on the valve stud while adjusting the swivel nut just enough to reach valve locks which can be taken off with a magnet. You can detach the valve spring parts by pressing down on the arm when the swivel nut is loosened. Apply the j 38820 to remove the old Valve Stem Oil Seal and grip both pieces before checking the valve spring. The valve stem and seal area need oil before putting the j 38820 into position to twirl in the new Valve Stem Oil Seal. Position the arm over the valve components but tighten the swivel nut only enough to access the valve locks with the j 43059. Then set the valve locks into position. Retract both the swivel nut and arm from the j 44211 tool before doing the same with any other valve in need of service. Discharge the cylinder air pressure and take out j 39313 from the Spark Plug hole plus j 44211 base plate to mount the new Spark Plug. Work through all remaining cylinders according to procedure and finally install the left camshafts before raising and supporting the vehicle once more to uninstall the j 44214. Place the torque converter cover before fastening the Oil Pan to transaxle brace using a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) and letting the vehicle return to its original position.

Service the valve components of the right side by taking out the right camshafts then lifting the vehicle for support. First take the bracket linking the engine Oil Pan with the transaxle case out of position before detaching the torque converter cover. Fasten the flywheel holder part j44214 and lower the car. To start engine maintenance put the base plate of the valve spring compressor j44211 onto the Spark Plug hole. Put the Spark Plug port adapter (J 39313) into the Spark Plug hole and hold the valve closed with steady air pressure. Place the valve spring compressor j 44211 arm and swivel nut onto the valve stud so you can reach the valve locks through the opening. Turn off the valve spring retainer and spring from their studs through the swivel nut with an arm movement after taking off the valve locks with magnetic assistance. Wrap the Valve Stem Oil Seal remover & installer tool part j38820 around the Valve Stem Oil Seal to eliminate it from the engine. Install the new Valve Stem Oil Seal in the correct position by twisting it with j 38820 tool after oiling the valve stem and new seal inner diameter with clean engine oil. Position the valve locks using the valve keeper installer while tightening the swivel nut just enough to service the valve locks. The valve spring compressor (J 44211) arm should swing over the valve spring retainer before releasing the swivel nut to reinstall the valve spring components. Place the valve locks with the valve keeper installer (J 43059) tools before taking off the valve spring compressor's (J 44211) swivel nut and arm. Sean the same steps to all additional valve ports after letting air out. Take off the Spark Plug port adapter (J 39313) from the Spark Plug hole. Reinstate the Spark Plug after you take off the base plate of the valve spring compressor tool j 44211. Put the process through additional cylinders before putting back all right camshafts then lowering the vehicle to install the flywheel holder (J 44214). After installing the torque converter cover replace the Oil Pan to transaxle brace while tightening bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) and put down the vehicle.

The valve stem oil seal and valve spring replacement on the right side begins by taking out both right camshafts and the Starter motor. Next you need to install the en 46326 flywheel holder. Before working on the Cylinder Head clean its Spark Plug recess area to stop any dirt from getting inside. Then remove the Spark Plug from the service cylinder. Start by positioning the j 44211 base plate on top of the Spark Plug hole before you insert the j 39313 through the hole while continuously applying compressed air through the valve retention hole. Embed the j 44211 arm and swivel nut onto each valve stud while keeping swivel nut torque just sufficient for lock access. Use a magnet to remove valve stem locks followed by swivel nut loosening so you can swing away the arm to extract the valve spring retainer and valve spring. Use the j 38820 tool to remove the old valve stem seal when replacement becomes necessary. Use clean engine oil to lubricate both the valve stem and the new seal before installing it into place by twisting and pushing with the j 38820. Swing the j 44211 arm holding the valve spring retainer and valve spring into position before tightening the swivel nut just enough to allow access to the valve locks. Use a magnet to position the valve locks before removing the swivel nut and arm from j 44211. Release the air pressure before removing the j 39313 tool from the Spark Plug hole and removing the base plate of the j 44211 . Install the Spark Plug then repeat the installation sequence for the other cylinders while replacing the right camshafts and taking out the en 46326 flywheel holder to begin Starter motor installation.

To service and repair valve stem oil seal and valve spring on the left side you will need to the following tools: j 38820 (Valve Stem Seal Installer), j 39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter), j 44211 (On-Vehicle Valve Spring Compressor), and en 46326 (Flywheel Holder). Start by breaking off the left camshafts and Starter motor. Install the en 46326 flywheel holder using an intensive clean of the Spark Plug recess area before to unplug the Spark Plug. Remove the Spark Plug and mount the base plate of the j 44211 onto the Spark Plug hole, then the j 39313 in the Spark Plug hole, keeping the constant air pressure to maintain the valve closed. Shadeed unit fit arm and swivel nut to the corresponding stud of valve shutting down the nut only to a point at which it could be accessed to locate the locks of the valve. After you remove the valve locks using a magnet, unscrew the swivel nut and then swing the arm away to unscrew the valve spring retainer and valve spring. The valve stem seal should not be stepped out unless it is needs replacement; use the j 38820, grip and twist off the old seal. Apply clean engine oil to lubricate the valve stem and the inner diameter of new seal, and insert the new valve stem seal with the help of the j 38820. Replace the valve spring and retain then swing the arm over the retainer and screw the swivel nut to allow for access of the valve locks. Place into position the valve locks using a magnet and grease when necessary, after which remove the swivel nut and arm of the j 44211. See to repeat this exercise for any more valves under treatment, relieve the air of pressure, and remove the j 39313 and the base plate of the j 44211 , then. Lastly, install the Spark Plug, left camshafts and remove en 46326 flywheel holder before installing the Starter motor.

Start the valve stem oil seal and valve spring replacement process by taking out the right camshafts and Starter. Fasten the en 46326 flywheel holder next. Mount the swivel nut and arm of j44211 onto its matching valve stud. Secure the swivel nut lightly until you can reach the valve locks. Push the magnet to remove valve stem locks before you turn the swivel nut and pull away the arm into position to take off the valve spring retainer and valve spring. You can replace the valve stem seal when new parts are needed but you should use the j38820 tool to grip and twist the existing seal from its position. Check and gauge the valve spring before applying oil to both ends of the valve stem and the inside surface of the new seal. Fit a stem sealing collar onto the valve stem then put on the new valve stem seal by using j38820 tool. Place the valve assembly onto the spring retainer and tighten the swivel nut of j44211 manually to an opening point before adding valve locks. Set the valve locks in their position using a magnet before taking the swivel nut and arm of the j44211 apart. Release air pressure from the system first then take off both j39313 and j44211 base plate assembly to install the Spark Plug. Rephrase this step to all cylinders receiving this service and return the right camshafts before raising and holding up the vehicle while taking off the en 46326 and putting back the Starter.

Remove the rocker arm, install the Spark Plug Port Adapter (J 22794), and apply compressed air to hold the valve in place.

Reinstall the valve spring and valve cap, compressing the valve spring again with the same tools.

Remove the valve rocker arm(s) and push rod(s), followed by the spark plugs.

Use the Valve Spring Compressor (J 38606) on the valve spring and compress it to remove the valve locks, followed by the valve spring and cap, and then the valve stem oil seal.

Remove the right camshafts and raise and support the vehicle.

J 38820 (Valve Stem Seal Remover and Installer), J 39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter), J 43059 (Valve Retainer Remover/Installer), J 44211 (On-Vehicle Valve Spring Compressor), and J 44214 (Flywheel Holder).

Relieve the air pressure and remove the Spark Plug Port Adapter (J39313) from the spark plug hole.

Attach the arm and swivel nut of the On-Vehicle Valve Spring Compressor (J 44211) over the stud corresponding to the valve to be serviced, tightening the swivel nut just enough to access the valve locks.

Position them using the On-Vehicle Valve Retainer Remover/Installer (J 43059).

Remove the valve locks using a magnet, then loosen the swivel nut and swing the arm away to extract the valve spring retainer and valve spring.

J 38820 (Valve Stem Seal Remover & Installer), J 39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter), J 43059 (Valve Keeper Installer), J 44211 (Valve Spring Compressor), and J 44214 (Flywheel Holder).

Remove the right camshafts and the starter.

Remove the valve locks using a magnet, loosen the swivel nut, and swing the arm away to remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.

Clean the spark plug recess area before removing the spark plug.

Use the EN 46116 to install the new valve stem seal, followed by the valve spring and valve spring retainer.

Position the EN 46110 above the cylinder and tighten its valve spring compressor nut.

Use the EN 46116 (Valve Stem Seal Remover/Installer) to remove the valve stem seal.

Tighten the exhaust bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) on the first pass, followed by a final pass of an additional 135° with the Torque Wrench (J 36660-A).

The required tools are Valve Stem Seal Remover and Installer (J 38820), Camshaft Sprocket Holding Tool (J 44222), and Valve Spring Compressor (J 44228).

Coat the camshaft journals, thrust face, and lobes with clean engine oil, then reinstall the camshafts in their original positions.
