2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on the 15 Series W/O NYS on 2004 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: Check the brake master cylinder fluid on 15 series models. You do not need to empty fluid if the mark lies mid-way between maximum and minimum marks. Reduce fluid when the mark rests above this range. Lift the vehicle and unscrew the wheel from its position. Protect the brake caliper through heavy mechanic's wire setup whenever you detach it from its holding position during hydraulic flexible brake hose connection to avoid pipe damage and leaks. Detach the caliper from its bracket but keep the hydraulic brake hose connected and examine the caliper components. You need to take out both brake pads and retainers from their position within the Brake Caliper Bracket. Apply a c-clamp to push the Piston down into the caliper bore with a Brake Pad substitute or wood block facing the Piston. Protect the Piston and boot surface from damage. Press the small flat-bladed tool under the caliper boot beside the Piston to relieve trapped air which should stay below the Piston surface. Place brake retainers on the caliper bracket so the sensor points up toward the pad leading edge when forward wheel moves next. Then put brake pads on top of the retainers onto the bracket. Attach the caliper back to its mounting bracket with two new caliper guide pin bolts and compress them to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Bolt back wheel components and lower the vehicle. As you turn off engine pull the brake pedal till its 2/3 distance then release the pedal gradually. Let the brake pedal go up and down for 15 seconds several times until the brake caliper pistons fully engage with the pads. Finish the process by adding brake fluid to the master cylinder and running the brake surface to make it smooth.
