2005 Buick LaCrosse Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2005 Buick LaCrosse?
A: Start the replacement by taking off the accessory Drive Belt from the A/C Compressor then lift and support the vehicle. First remove the lower air deflector and discard the compressor clutch plate bolt while using the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) to secure the compressor clutch plate from rotation. Install three 5/16x1 inch bolts in place of the three adjustable dowels found on the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872). Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to remove the compressor clutch plate then the compressor pulley snap ring before taking out the compressor pulley followed by the compressor clutch coil snap ring also using snap ring pliers (J 6083). You must discard the compressor clutch coil from the device. Before installing apply an m6x1.0 tap to clean all threads and use compressed air to blow out debris from the threads. Set down the compressor clutch coil while securing its snap ring with snap ring pliers (J 6083) then mount the compressor pulley and perform the same operation with snap ring pliers (J 6083). Before assembling the compressor clutch plate add a drop of oil to the 0.4 mm (0.016 in) air gap shim which should be inserted into the clutch drive plate. Use snap ring pliers (J 6083) to place 0.3-0.6 mm (0.012-0.024 in) air gap shims between the pulley and drive plate then adjust the shims to prevent drive plate drag when rotating the pulley. Install the clutch drive plate bolt with at least 5 color-coded threads of new adhesive before using the compressor clutch holding tool (J 37872) to tighten the bolt to 12 n.m (106 lb in) while preventing the compressor clutch plate from rotation. To complete the repair you must replace the lower air deflector, lower the vehicle and install the accessory Drive Belt onto the A/C Compressor before running a halogen leak detector (J 39400-A) test on all fittings.
