- Q: How to replace the front brake calipers (RPO J65, JL9) on 2005 Buick LaCrosse?A: Before starting the front brake caliper replacement procedure (RPO J65, JL9) check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; if it shows above the middle part of the requirements range empty fluid until reaching that position. Mount the vehicle on proper supports and take off the front wheel and tire unit. Fasten both wheel lug nuts by hand to hold the rotor in place and place a large c-clamp over the caliper before tightening it to push the piston into the bore and unseat the caliper from the rotor. Set aside the c-clamp to pick out and replace the 2 brake hose gaskets and caliper bolt from the brake hose. First block the front brake hose opening as fluid leak and debris entry protection. Then work with these steps: take out the leading pin bolt with its bushing and trailing solid pin bolt. Check the caliper bolt boots for faults and replace them. Also inspect and replace the caliper bolts if needed because they show damage or wear during examination. Insert new caliper pin bolts when required. Wipe the caliper pin bolts using a shop cloth and put on gm p/n or equivalent lubricant to both the bushing and bolts. Adjust the leading caliper pin so lubricant does not pool at its tip. Place the caliper over the rotor and onto the bracket then install the caliper pins by ensuring bolt boots fit their grooves and tightening them to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). Install new copper brake hose gaskets over brake hose body and bolt the brake hose onto the caliper. Tighten the bolt to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs). After removing 2 wheel lug nuts from rotor position install the front tire assembly and lower the vehicle prior to filling the master cylinder with new brake fluid and conducting the brake system bleed. If necessary test for fluid leaks.
