A caliper piston seal installer (J 35777) is the essential tool for serving and repairing the front brake caliper. Begin the service by taking off the brake caliper while keeping fingers away from the piston area because the air pressure can force out the piston and harm your fingers. Use clear cloths inside the caliper when removing pistons to reduce friction and push them toward the bores. If damage shows on your Brake Caliper Piston during inspection you need to replace it. Use a flat-bladed tool to carefully remove the Brake Caliper Piston boot but keep the housing bore safe from scratches and avoid metallic tools which may cause harm. Use a wooden or plastic tool to take out the piston seal from the caliper bore groove and then evaluate the caliper passage and seal channel for surface damages. Use crocus cloth to polish off light corrosion before needing to replace the caliper when corrosion cannot be cleaned properly. Check and replace brake caliper bolt boots that show signs of damage before inspecting and replacing damaged caliper bolts without attempting to clean corrosion. Before cleanup remove the caliper brake bleeder parts and clean all components with denatured alcohol. Use filtered non-lubricated compressed air to dry the parts. Use filtered non-oiled compressed air to clear all airways inside the caliper housing and bleeder valve. You should install the bleeder valve and cap onto the caliper housing before adding delco supreme 11(R) brake fluid to lubricate the new piston seal. Then simply push the lubricated seal into the caliper bores without rotating it. Place the lubricated boot onto the Brake Caliper Piston. Insert brake fluid for lubrication and place both parts into the caliper bore while pushing the piston to its lowest position down the bore. Place the caliper boot into the counterbore space using the caliper piston seal installer (J 35777).

Look for cracks, scoring, pitting, excessive rust, or corrosion.

Use clean cloths to pad the interior of the caliper housing.

Remove the brake hose-to-caliper bolt, discarding the 2 copper brake hose gaskets, and plug the opening in the rear brake hose to prevent excessive fluid loss and contamination.

Install the caliper bolts, using a screwdriver to push the bolt boot over the shoulder of the caliper bolt, ensuring a secure fit in the groove.

Check for cracks or damage and replace if necessary.

With the engine off, gradually apply the brake pedal to about 2/3 of its travel, slowly release it, and repeat until a firm pedal is achieved.

Replace the caliper assembly.

Tighten them to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).

Use a large C-clamp over the brake caliper, positioning the ends against the rear of the caliper body and the outer brake pad, and tighten it until the piston is compressed enough to slide past the brake rotor.

Rotate the caliper down into the bracket and install the pin bolts, tightening them to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

Use clean cloths to pad the interior of the caliper housing.

Remove the brake pads and brake pad retainers from the brake caliper bracket.

Plug the openings in the brake caliper and brake hose.

Assemble the brake hose bolt with NEW copper brake hose gaskets and attach the brake hose to caliper bolt to the brake caliper, holding the hose up while tightening to 44 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).

Remove two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.

Clean them with denatured alcohol and dry them with non-lubricated, filtered air.

Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever on the caliper.

Abrasives.

27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

The piston seal.

Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts, install the front tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, fill the master cylinder with clean brake fluid, bleed the brake system, and finally inspect the hydraulic brake system for leaks.

The bleeder valve and cap.

A light film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant.

Apply THREADLOCKER, GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or an equivalent to the threads of the brake caliper bracket bolts.

Install and hand tighten 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.

Remove the C-clamp, then take out the brake hose-to-caliper bolt and discard the two copper brake hose gaskets.

Install it without twisting.

Align the previous marks on the wheel and hub and bearing, lower the vehicle, and fill the master cylinder with clean brake fluid.

95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).

Check for cuts, tears, or deterioration.

Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever on the brake caliper and remove it from the caliper bracket.

A thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant, avoiding the brake pad hardware.

Remove the nuts securing the rotor to the hub, install the tire and wheel, lower the vehicle, fill the master cylinder to the proper level, and bleed the brake system.

Use a large C-clamp over the brake caliper body, with the ends against the rear of the caliper and the outer brake pad, and tighten it until the piston is compressed enough to slide past the brake rotor.

Clean them with denatured alcohol and apply a thin coat of hi temperature silicone.

Gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance with the engine off, then slowly release it. Wait 15 seconds and repeat until a firm brake pedal is achieved.

Begin by removing two-thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder, then raise and support the vehicle.

Plug the openings in the brake caliper and pipe.

Avoid placing fingers in front of the piston while applying compressed air to prevent injury.

Reduce it to the midway point.

Install the caliper bracket using the bracket bolts and tighten them to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).

Begin by removing the caliper from the vehicle.

Use a large C-clamp over the caliper housing against the back of the outboard pad.

A large C-clamp is used to compress the brake caliper piston into the caliper bore without exceeding 1 mm (0.039 inch) of piston travel.

Upgrade the first design hardware to the second design hardware with new caliper pin bolts, then remove the brake caliper pin bolts and the brake caliper itself.

If using the first design hardware, apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant; if using the second design hardware, apply NIGLUBE grease.

Insert a 25 mm (1 inch) block of wood between the caliper and the piston, then install a large C-clamp over the caliper body to assist in piston removal.

Install the brake caliper onto the upper caliper pin bolt, rotate it down over the brake pads onto the brake caliper bracket, and install the lower brake caliper pin bolt, tightening it to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

Utilize a small wooden or plastic tool to remove and discard the piston dust boot seal from the seal counterbore in the caliper.

Inspect for any damage to the chrome plating and replace it if necessary.

Inspect the piston boots for cuts, tears, or deterioration, replacing them if damaged, and do the same for the caliper bracket boots. Check the caliper bolts for corrosion or damage, using new parts if necessary.

Remove the two caliper bracket bolts and the caliper bracket.

Finally, install the rear brake pads and the caliper.

Lubricate the caliper bolts with silicone grease, avoiding the threads, and also lubricate the bolt boots in the caliper bracket.

Raise and support the vehicle, then remove the front tire and wheel assembly.

Inspect the caliper bore for any cracks, scoring, pitting, excessive rust, or corrosion.

Any significant damage such as cracks or excessive corrosion.

Use a small wooden or plastic tool.

Inspect and replace any brake caliper bolt boots that show cuts, tears, or deterioration.

Raise and support the vehicle, then remove the tire and wheel.

Plug the openings in the brake caliper and hose.

Polish it out with crocus cloth, but replace the caliper if corrosion around the seal groove cannot be cleaned.

Clean cloths.

Remove the nuts securing the rotor to the hub, install the tire and wheel, and lower the vehicle.

Align the indents on the piston face with the pin on the brake pad, inspect the bracket bolt guide assembly, and check the brake pad hardware for necessary replacements.

Inspect and replace any worn or damaged brake caliper bolts and brake caliper bolt boots.

Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is above the midway point, remove fluid to reach that point.

Check the caliper pins for corrosion or damage, replacing the pin and boot if necessary.
