2005 Buick LeSabre Catalytic Converter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the catalytic converter on 2005 Buick LeSabre?
A: To replace the Catalytic Converter (L36), (1) raise and hold the vehicle (2) then hold the exhaust system around the resonator with a suitable jack. Remove the Oxygen Sensor without disengaging the electrical connector, and remove nuts that hold the Catalytic Converter to the exhaust manifold pipe. Next, take out the bolts which hold the center exhaust hangers to the rear suspension support brackets and remove Catalytic Converter from manifold pipe. Drop the exhaust system and remove the Catalytic Converter Gasket, and make sure that you do not reuse it. Remove the Catalytic Converter from the resonator inlet pipe as close to the step where the tool will reach and ensure that it is cut on the Catalytic Converter side of the pipe. For installation, lower the exhaust system enough to install the Catalytic Converter to the resonator inlet pipe, and make sure that you do not over extend the heated Oxygen Sensor pigtail. Slide 2 down over the Catalytic Converter, outlet pipe, but do not tighten it, then slide the outlet pipe, 2, over the resonator inlet pipe until it is fully seated against the heated Oxygen Sensor boss ensuring the solid portion of the Catalytic Converter heat shield is upward. Mount a new Catalytic Converter Gasket over the Catalytic Converter studs and then in position, raise the exhaust system and align the Catalytic Converter with the exhaust manifold pipe. Mount the nuts fastening the Catalytic Converter to the exhaust manifold pipe but do not tighten, then mount the bolts fastening the center exhaust hangers to the rear suspension support brackets tighten bolts to 30nm (22 lb ft). Mount the Catalytic Converter nuts and apply them in a crisscross pattern with 25 nm (18 lb ft). Lift the vehicle and remove the jack as well as centering the service clamps about midway on the Catalytic Converter outlet pipe ensuring that the pipe is fully slid over onto the heated Oxygen Sensor boss. Rotate the clamps so that the fastening ends are turned in opposite directions and tighten them to 30 nm (22 lb ft). Finally, install the Oxygen Sensor and tighten it to 41 nm (30 lb ft), drop the vehicle, and inspect the exhaust system for leaks.
