- Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2005 Cadillac SRX?A: Begin the lower intermediate Steering Shaft replacement by first making sure both front wheels face straight ahead while the Steering Column remains locked to protect the sir coil assembly. Use a key to turn the Ignition Lock Cylinder into the locked position before removing the key. Insert j 42640 (J 42640) through the access hole on the lower Steering Column trim cover for Steering Column locking. Raise and support the vehicle. Make sure to record the correct alignment between the center intermediate shaft and the lower intermediate shaft during assembly. Use a tool to remove the retaining bolt which holds the lower intermediate shaft to the power steering gear and then the retaining bolt connecting the center intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft. Detach the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear and remove it from the center intermediate shaft. Install the lower intermediate shaft by first attaching it to the center intermediate shaft then attaching it to the power steering gear. Fasten the retaining bolt for the power steering gear and tighten it with a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Then install the retaining bolt for the center intermediate shaft with a torque of 30 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). Last, lower the vehicle to access the j 42640 (J 42640) from the trim cover opening on the Steering Column lower part.
