• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2005 Cadillac STS?

  A: First, drain the cooling system, remove the air outlet duct to lead to the Thermostat Housing. Using the hose clamp pliers (J38185), disconnect the heater hose from the Thermostat Housing as well as the coolant Radiator Hose. When applicable, remove the afterboil coolant pump, the drive belt tensioner and the drive belt idler pulley bolt, and then the idler pulley. Next, unbolt the Water Pump pulley, lift and support the vehicle, and remove the crankshaft balancer. Remove the engine front cover bolts and remove the engine front cover and throw away the old gasket. Clean and inspect the engine front cover and apply a small amount of clean sealant gm p/n 12578521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) at the split line of the upper and lower crankcases and at the top of the block face. Hold the new engine front cover gasket to the crankcase dowel pins and position the engine front cover. Applying thread locking compound gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) to the threads of the engine front cover bolts, install them and tighten them to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) in the specified sequence. Reinstall the crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump pulley by tightening the pulley bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.),kanji. Then install the drive belt idler pulley and its bolt with one driving 50 nm (37 ft lbs.) tightening it followed by the drive belt tensioner. After that, reconnect the coolant Radiator Hose and the heater hose with the help of hose clamp pliers (J38185), reinstall the replacement afterboil coolant pump if equipped, and lastly, connect the air outlet duct before filling the cooling system.
