• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2006 Cadillac STS?

  A: You must drain both engine cooling system fluids and charge air cooling system fluids before starting to replace the engine front cover. The necessary removal steps include the supercharger assembly along with the water outlet housing, air conditioning system, power steering system, and Water Pump Drive Belt and accompanying tensioner and idler pulley. Move through this sequence of steps: remove the front engine compartment sight shield and the electric cooling fan assembly along with the charge air cooling coolant pump and its charge air cooler radiator inlet and outlet hoses and heater hose and Radiator Hose and generator Drive Belt tensioner and generator Drive Belt. Start by removing bolts from the Water Pump Pulley and crankshaft balancer and engine front cover to get the engine front cover off. Also get rid of the engine front cover gasket at this moment. Also remove the Water Pump and front cover fitting and Thermostat when replacing the front cover. You need to clean the front cover along with its attaching surface. Reinstall the Water Pump followed by the Thermostat followed by the front cover fitting. Sealant gm p/n 12578521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) must be applied at the split line of the upper and lower crankcases and at the top of the block face. Fit the new engine front cover gasket onto the crankcase dowel pins then set the engine front cover into proper position on the crankcase. The engine front cover bolts require application of thread locking compound gm p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) before tightening them to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) in the specified installation order. After installation of the Water Pump Pulley install the crankshaft balancer followed by the generator Drive Belt tensioner and generator Drive Belt. Next install the Radiator Hose and heater hose onto the Thermostat Housing as well as the charge air cooler radiator inlet and outlet hoses and charge air cooling coolant pump and electric cooling fan assembly and front engine compartment sight shield. After reinstalling idler pulleys and tensioners for the supercharger Drive Belt install the power steering system and air conditioner followed by engine Water Pump Drive Belt idler pulley tensioner and belt and windup with water outlet housing and supercharger assembly. The technician fills both the coolant tanks and inspects for leaking components including the front cover and both cooling systems.
