2005 Chevrolet Blazer Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on 2005 Chevrolet Blazer?
A: Before replacing the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil operators need to disable the sir system while maintaining a straight wheel alignment with the j 42640 steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) installed or by placing the ignition switch in the lock position. The replacement sequence begins with Steering Wheel extraction from the shaft followed by pulling out the tilt lever when needed and finishing with two lower trim cover torx(R) head screws. Through subsequent steps you need to remove 2 torx(R) head screws from the upper trim cover before pulling it away. To get to the air bag clock spring you need to unfasten Steering Wheel column wire harness straps then remove the retaining ring before taking out the coil which can be disposed if you replaced. Make sure the wheels point straight forward before putting in the j 42640 or setting the ignition switch to lock position. Before using an existing coil make sure it sits in the proper center position. Zeiss j 42640 tool helps you align the new air bag clock spring assembly to the horn tower of the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Then place the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly and push the retaining ring into its mounting groove. Use 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) torque to tighten 2 torx(R) head screws while installation of the upper trim cover with its centering tab removed from the new air bag clock spring. Install the lower trim cover by tightening 2 torx(R) head screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) while maintaining cutout tab engagement. When dealing with tilt column vehicles use the tilt lever to position the handle inside the steering column until it locks into place. Complete installation of the Steering Wheel involves placing it onto the Steering Shaft when the sir system becomes operational.
