2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: In order to replace the park/neutral position (PNP) switch, first use the parking brake and confirm the control assembly in neutral position, including the transaxle manual shaft in neutral. First, take out the shift control cable from the transaxle range switch lever and also separate the electrical connectors to the transaxle range control. Next, undo the transaxle range switch lever nut and lever, followed by the bolt for the transaxle range switch in order to remove the switch. For the installation of the old switch, make sure that the transaxle manual shaft is in neutral, align flats on the transaxle shift shaft with flats on the transaxle range switch, and install the transaxle range switch bolts loosely. Make sure to insert j 41545 park/neutral switch aligner (J 41545) and rotate the switch to determine the position where the tool drops into position. Tighten the transaxle range switch bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Re-attach the alignment tool (remove it), then install the transaxle range switch lever, and fasten in place the lever retaining nut at the torque of 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). After changing the switch, ensure that it only starts while in park or neutral; if it begins in any other position, reshape the switch accordingly. Lastly, join the transaxle range switch electrical connectors and attach the shift control cable to the transaxle range switch lever fittingly to ensure the operational aspect. Repeat the same process for a new switch, except the manual shaft in the transaxle should be in neutral, assemble the flats, tighten the bolts of the transaxle range switch to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.), install the lever and nut, plug the nuts to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.), and confirm the engine would impossibly start in park or neutral only after adjusting.
