2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: To replace the park/neutral position (PNP) switch one has to apply the parking brake of course and also ensure that one control assembly while the transaxle is manual and in neutral position the transaxle manual shaft should also be in neutral. Start with removing the shift control cable from the transaxle range switch lever, followed by the disconnecting of the electrical connector at the transaxle range switch. Then, loosen the transaxle range switch lever nut and lever, then the switch bolts to pull out the switch. For the installation of the old switch, ensure the transaxle manual shaft is possible neutral, along with aligning the flats on the transaxle shift shaft along with those on the transaxle range switch, and then install the switch. Loosely bolt the transaxle range switch bolts, then insert the j 41545 park/neutral switch aligner (J 41545) and turn switch until the tool falls into place. Tighten the transaxle range switch bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.), take out the alignment tool, and install the transaxle range switch lever and nut and tighten the lever retaining nut to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). And once the switch has been adjusted, make sure the engine only starts in park or neutral. Make necessary adjustments over the switch if it starts from any other position. Lastly, connect the transaxle range switch electrical connectors and attach the shift control cable to the transaxle range switch lever, in order to function properly. For the new switch installation, you would follow the same initial procedures as aforementioned i.e., the transaxle manual shaft, in neutral, align the flats and install the switch, tightening the range switch bolts 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before installing the lever, and nut (35 Nm (26 ft - lbs.). Again, verify that the engine starts only in park or neutral after adjustment and install the shift control cable to the transaxle range switch lever verifying operation.
