2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Replace the park/neutral position switch by first engaging the parking brake while the control assembly sits in neutral position and transaxle manual shaft remains at neutral. First disconnect the shift control cable from the transaxle range switch lever then break off the electrical connector from the switch followed by unscrewing the lever's nut and removing the lever itself. You need to remove both the transaxle range switch bolts and then take out the switch component. Begin old switch installation by placing the transaxle manual shaft in the neutral position and lining up the flat sections of transaxle shift shaft with the transaxle range switch. Slightly tighten the transaxle range switch bolts before placing the j41545 park/neutral switch aligner (J41545) into position and rotating the switch. After removing the alignment tool install the transaxle range switch lever and nut. Tighten the retaining nut to 35 n.m (26 lb ft). Then secure the transaxle range switch bolts to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Check that the engine crank only occurs while the vehicle is in park or neutral position after switch adjustment. After ensuring the engine does not start from positions other than park or neutral, readjust the switch accordingly. Finish by connecting the transaxle range switch electrical connector and then installing the shift control cable hook-ups to the transaxle range switch lever for correct functionality. Use the same procedure for new switch implementation by first positioning the transaxle manual shaft into neutral position then align the flats before tightening the bolts to 20 n.m (15 lb ft) torque specification and following the steps.
