2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack and Pinion steering gear on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: To service and repair the Rack And Pinion head, start by gathering the tools for the job: the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B). Begin by rotating the steering wheel to the straight position and pulling the key out of the ignition, after that, rotate the wheel counterclockwise to lock the steering column. Lift and support the vehicle and take out the front wheels. It is important not to turn one half of the shaft once it is detached from the Rack And Pinion to prevent either damage or improper function. Pull out and throw away the Rack And Pinion to intermediate shaft pinch bolt and remove the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion. Discard the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod to knuckles nuts and separate the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles using the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B). Next, take out the Rack And Pinion bolts and carefully pull out the Rack And Pinion from the frame through left hand wheel opening. For installation, install the Rack And Pinion back into the frame via the left-hand wheel opening and install the Rack And Pinion bolts tightened to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). Connect the intermediate shaft to Rack And Pinion and fit a new pinch bolt on the intermediate shaft and tighten to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Mount the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles and secure them with new outer tie rod nuts, tighten steering linkage outer tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut to 25 nm (18 lb ft) with an additional 90-degrees. Lastly, reinstall the front wheels, deflate the vehicle, and turn the toe if necessary.
