    Q:
How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
Rack And Pinion replacement operations must start with Steering Wheel immobilization to stop accessory rotation using an anti-rotation pin, steering column lock or a secure mount to shield the sir system from damage. Start by securing the Steering Wheel before removing the front tires and wheels assemblies then disconnect the intermediate Steering Shaft by removing its bolt for disposal. Puller (J 24319-B) helps separate outer tie rod ends from steering knuckles by removing both Rack And Pinion outer tie rod end nuts without using a wedge type tool. The Rack And Pinion's extraction process proceeds by starting with bolt removal from the Rack And Pinion and transmission rear mount before pulling the gear out through the left wheelhouse opening. Return the Rack And Pinion through the left wheelhouse opening before installing new Rack And Pinion bolts at 110 nm (81 lb ft) torque setting and reinstalling the transmission rear mount. The intermediate Steering Shaft requires a new bolt which should receive a torque setting of 34 nm (25 lb ft) before attaching the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles using new nuts that reach 25 nm (18 lb ft) while being torqued an additional 90 degrees. After reinstalling front tires and wheels adjust the front wheel alignment toe reading. Steering angle sensor calibration must be performed on vehicles with rpo jl4.
