2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion steering gear on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The process of Rack And Pinion replacement begins with wheel strapping to stop movement while you secure the Steering Column lock to protect against sir system harm. Set the Steering Wheel at completely straight and use a locking mechanism to secure it. Remove the front tire/wheel assemblies. Start by removing the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt that connects the Rack And Pinion and disposing of it before separating the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion. Separate both Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends by removing their nuts and discard them without using a wedge tool to split them apart. Match the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends with puller (J 24319-B) from the steering knuckles before you remove the Rack And Pinion bolts and transmission rear mount. Route the Rack And Pinion extraction through the left wheelhouse opening of the vehicle. After Rack And Pinion placement through the left wheelhouse opening install bolts onto the Rack And Pinion then torque them to 110 nm (81 lb ft). The transmission rear mount goes back into its original position followed by intermediate Steering Shaft attachment to the Rack And Pinion then installation of a new intermediate Steering Shaft bolt requiring a torque of 34 nm (25 lb ft). Screw the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends onto the steering knuckles using new nuts at 25 nm torque level (18 lb ft) while making a 90-degree nut engagement. The last step involves installing the front tire/wheel assemblies then performing a front toe adjustment.
