2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The first step for Rack And Pinion replacement demands Steering Wheel immobilization because Steering Column locking protects the sir system from damage. Start with Steering Wheel alignment to straight ahead before securing it in position. Remove the front tire/wheel assemblies. First unfasten and discard the intermediate Steering Shaft bolt on the Rack And Pinion before disconnecting the intermediate Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion. Untighten the nuts on both Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends before removing them but avoid using wedging tools when performing separation work. Separate the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends from steering knuckles by using the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B). Extract the Rack And Pinion by removing the Rack And Pinion bolts first followed by the transmission rear mount through the left wheelhouse opening. Installation requires Rack And Pinion feed-through the left wheelhouse opening followed by bolt tightening to 110 n.m (81 lb ft). Install the transmission rear mount then join the intermediate Steering Shaft to the Rack And Pinion before fitting an entirely new intermediate Steering Shaft bolt which requires tightening to 34 n.m (25 lb ft). Secure the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends to their appropriate locations on steering knuckles by installing new nuts that reach 25 n.m (18 lb ft) torque then continue the installation by turning each nut an additional 90 degrees. The last step includes reinstallation of front tire/wheel assemblies followed by front toe adjustment.
