2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering linkage outer tie rod on 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: You must take off the front tire/wheel before starting the replacement of the steering linkage outer Tie Rod. First loosen the nut that connects to the rack and pinion inner Tie Rod before removing and disposing of the outer Tie Rod End nut on the rack and pinion. Separate the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle with puller (J 24319-B) while counting the full rotation number between the outer Tie Rod End and rack and pinion inner Tie Rod. Details of the inner Tie Rod nut become secondary for disposal after outer Tie Rod End removal. Check the rack and pinion inner Tie Rod thread condition for damage and debris before installation because you may need to repair or replace the affected parts. Install a new inner Tie Rod nut and perform an installation of the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End onto the inner Tie Rod by matching the number of initial removal rotations. The Steering Knuckle receives the outer Tie Rod End which needs a new rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End nut installed before achieving a torque of 25 nm (18 lb ft) while turning the nut by 90 degrees. After reinstallation of the front tire/wheel proceed with tightening the rack and pinion inner Tie Rod nut and completing front toe adjustment.
