2005 Chevrolet Colorado Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2005 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: To replace the park/neutral back up switch, start by pulling the parking brake and the gear to neutral. Lift the vehicle and then take off the nut of the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and remove the lever. Pull the electrical connector off the switch and unfasten the bolts that hold the park/neutral back up switch to the transmission. If the switch doesn't slide off from the manual shaft, file any burrs off the outer edge of the manual shift shaft. Mount the new park/neutral back up switch tangs onto the manual shaft and align the switch hub flats with the manual shaft flats slide it onto the shaft until the mounting bracket contacts the transmission bosses. If a new switch is going in, it will fall in with a positive assurance bracket, thus the need for a j 41364-a park neutral switch aligner is not necessary. Loosely install the two switch bolts and then the tool is set on the switch with the alignment of the slots with tabs. Turn the switch clockwise until the upper locator pin on the tool enters the slot on the switch, and fasten the bolts with a torque of 27 nm (20 ft.lb.). Delete the j 41364-a and if necessary the positive assurance bracket. Reconnect the electrical connetor to the switch and reinstall the transmission control lever onto the switch, tightening the nut to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle and adjust automatic transmission range selector cable and check the switch operation to ensure that engine should only start in p (Park) or n (Neutral). Repair or replace the switch if it does not work properly.
