Back-Up Switch

Start by raising the vehicle before proceeding with replacement of the back up lamp switch. First disconnect the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail before opening the tie strap that secures the pigtail to the transmission. Extract the back up lamp switch while also removing its aluminum washer. Insert a NEW aluminum washer into the transmission case when installing the back up lamp switch while tightening it to 44 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Lower the vehicle only after securing the pigtail to the transmission through the tie strap and reconnecting the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail.

Vehicle lifting and support are necessary before starting back up lamp switch replacement tasks. Start by cutting the electrical connector on the pigtail which serves the back up lamp switch and then defy the strap which holds this pigtail to the transmission. You should detach both the back up lamp switch together with the aluminum washer while working on the replacement. Use a fresh aluminum washer for backing lamp switch installation into the transmission tub where a 44 n.m (32 lb ft) torque setting secures it properly. After securing the pigtail to the transmission with the tie strap connect the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail and complete the repair by lowering the vehicle.

You must begin by removing the transmission oil pan and filter before changing the manual shift detent lever and shaft position switch assembly. You need to separate parts (89) (92) (88) (85) and (84) before removing the manual shaft seal (82) with a screwdriver. The manual shaft (84) must be examined for damaged surface or sharp edges along with the parking lock actuator assembly (85) for indicators of damage and the manual shift detent lever with shaft position switch assembly (88) for damage or cracks and the manual valve link (89) for damage and the manual shift detent lever pin (92) should be discarded for not being reusable. Install the manual shift detent lever with shaft position switch assembly (88), parking lock actuator assembly (85), manual shaft (84) (model dependent), a new manual shift detent lever pin (92), and the manual valve link (89) by tightening the nut to 31 nm (23 lb ft). Complete the installation process by adding the transmission oil pan together with the filter.

In order to remove the park/neutral back up switch, you should first set the park brake and move the transmission into neutral. Lift and support the vehicle, loosening the nut that holds the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and the lever as well. Detaching the park/neutral back up switch away from the transmission using its bolts, then disconnect the electrical connector from it. If the switch doesn't slide off the manual shaft, file off burrs at the outer edge of the manual shift shaft. Mount the new neutral park back up switch onto the manual shaft by aligning the switch hub flats to the flat on the transmitting shaft and slid onto the shaft until the mounting bracket contacts to the transmission bosses. If the switch that is being installed is new, it will include a positive assurance bracket, and thus there will be no need for a j 41364 -a park neutral switch aligner. Loosely install the two bolts for the switch and then mount it onto the switch by ensuring the alignment of the slots with tabs on the tool). Rotate the switch until the upper locator pin aligns with the slot on the switch, then tighten the switch bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs). Also, remove the j 41364-a (and positive assurance bracket where applicable). Reconnect the electrical connector to the switch and install the transmission control lever with nut tighten to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Reduce the vehicle, set the automatic transmission range selector cable and examine the switch for its ability to work, as the engine is only started when the switch is in the p (Park) or n (Neutral) positions; if the switch does not work well, replace it.

The first step to replace the back up lamp switch requires vehicle elevation and support. Begin by disconnecting the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail then remove the strap that holds the pigtail to the transmission. The back up lamp switch removal requires separate removal of both the aluminum washer and the switch itself. Use a new aluminum washer when installing the back up lamp switch into the transmission case. Torque the switch to 44 nm (32 lb ft). Reconnect the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail after securing the pigtail to the transmission through the tie strap then lower the vehicle.

To replace the back up lamp switch, one would first lift and hold the vehicle. Pull off the back up lamp switch electrical connector located at the pigtail and release the tie strap that holds the pigtail to the transmission. Back up the lamp switch and the washer that is made of aluminum. To install, use a new aluminum washer to install the back up lamp switch into transmission case, tighten it to 44 n.m (32 lb ft). Secure the pigtail to the transmission using the tie strap and replace the back up lamp switch electrical connector at the pigtail before lifting the vehicle.

Rotate the switch until the upper locator pin on the tool aligns with the slot on the switch.

Install the new switch onto the transmission manual shaft, ensuring the switch hub flats align with the manual shaft flats, and slide it until the mounting bracket contacts the transmission bosses.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and remove the bolts securing the park/neutral backup switch to the transmission.

Remove the backup lamp switch along with the aluminum washer.
