GMC Canyon Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch and back up Lamp Switch on GMC Canyon?
A: Begin installation by setting the parking brake then shifting your transmission into neutral before replacing the park/neutral position and back up lamp switch. Begin by supporting the vehicle at height before removing the transmission control lever manual shaft retaining nut and then uninstalling the lever itself. First disconnect the switch's electrical connector then remove the bolts that join the park/neutral back up switch to the transmission. The manual shift shaft outer edge needs file treatment to remove any burrs if the switch fails to glide off this shaft. Mount the new park/neutral back up switch onto the manual transmission shaft while maintaining flat alignment between switch hub and manual shaft and ensuring switch bracket touches transmission mounting bosses. The inclusion of a positive assurance bracket with new switches eliminates the requirement for using the park neutral switch aligner (J 41364-A). Place the j 41364-a park neutral switch aligner tool over the switch before aligning its lower slots with the tool's bottom tabs. Once both slots are in position, install the switch bolts loosely. After removing the aligner tool, tighten the switch bolts to 27 n.m (20 lb ft). Use the park/neutral switch aligner tool to locate its upper pin with the switch's top slot. After this position occurs tighten the park/neutral back up switch bolts to 27 n.m (20 lb ft). Take the park neutral switch aligner (J 41364-A) off along with any relevant positive assurance brackets. Use the switch aligner tool (J 41364-A) to link the switch electrical connector before installing the manual lever on its shaft while tightening the nut to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Verify the switch operates correctly by starting the engine only in p (PARK) or n (NEUTRAL) positions after adjusting the automatic transmission range selector cable and lowering the vehicle. The switch needs replacement if it shows any operational issues.
