The first step to replace a 5l40-e/5l50-e automatic transmission manual shift shaft position switch requires you to lift and stabilize the vehicle. To perform this replacement begin by disassembling the manual shift shaft nut then separating the shift linkage from its connection with the manual shaft. After removing the exhaust system disconnect the propeller shaft coupler at the transmission flange by pushing the front propeller shaft toward the rear. Secure the front propeller shaft towards the shift control lever by using mechanics wire. A small screwdriver helps eliminate the shaft seal and cup plug before getting new components for the replacement. Switch replacement only requires transmission removal if the manual shift shaft shows signs of damage. Start by disconnecting the electrical connector from the manual shift shaft position switch then use a suitable pin punch to remove the retaining pin. Next, remove the transmission fluid pan and filter. Position a suitable transmission jack underneath the transmission support before taking away the manual shift shaft detent spring and bolts. Lower the rear of the transmission until you can extract the manual shift shaft. Then remove all components including the manual shift shaft position switch, detent lever, assembly spacer and park pawl actuator as one assembly. Add the new installation parts beginning with the switch then the detent lever and assembly spacer and park pawl actuator as an assembly while pushing the park pawl upwards when necessary. After placing the manual shift shaft fully inside the transmission case, raise the transmission back to its initial position while you install the transmission support. Untighten control valve body bolts to install the detent spring into position and secure it with the control valve body bolts . Check that the manual valve link attaches correctly to the detent lever through its locating pin as well as the detent spring roller connecting with the manual shift shaft switch. Place the retaining pin through the appropriate pin punch opening before connecting the electrical connector to the switch. Place a 0.8 mm spacer between the detent lever and spring before tightening the detent spring bolts to 11 nm (97 lb in). Remove the spacer after tightening. Install the transmission fluid pan and filter afterward reinstall the shaft seal using j 44767 before inserting the tool completely into the transmission. Apply lubricant to a new cup plug before installing it to reach full transmission case length. The mechanics wire must be removed from the front propeller shaft's connection to the shift control lever before installing the transmission flange coupler. Secure the shift linkage to the manual shift shaft then tighten the manual shift shaft nut to 9 nm (80 lb in) torque. To achieve proper transmission performance adjust the shift control linkage properly then lower the vehicle before resetting the transmission adaptive pressure values through a scan tool.

Insert the manual shift shaft position switch, detent lever, assembly spacer, and park pawl actuator as an assembly, ensuring the park pawl is pushed up if necessary.
