2005 Chevrolet Impala Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should one safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on 2005 Chevrolet Impala?
A: You should leave the snap ring inside the gas charged shock absorber tube intact because removing it could result in dangerous gas expulsion with enormous force. Use safety glasses before centerpunching and drilling your shock absorber tubes while also protecting the tube from damage. First step is to create a 10 mm (0.4 inch) indentation which starts at the bottom tube of the shock absorber tube with the use of a centerpunch. Secure the shock absorber inside a vise while keeping the shock absorber rod in its maximum extended position. Use a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit to make a hole at the centerpunch mark through the shock absorber to allow either gas or a gas/oil mixture to escape. The expert uses shop towels to catch any escaping oil. Drill a 5 mm (3/16 inch) hole at the centerpunch using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit in the shock absorber tube's center while maintaining oil containment through the use of shop towels. Position the drain pan horizontally under the shock absorber holes and use the rod to extract all oil from the shock absorber by moving it back and forth through the tube.
