2005 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: First prepare by obtaining these replacement tools including use universal spanner wrench (J 37872) and snap ring pliers (J 6083) tools for the job. Universal spanner wrench (J 37872) and snap ring pliers (J 6083). Start the procedure by taking out the engine Drive Belt then raise the vehicle. Start by taking out the right front fender liner followed by the right radiator air deflector retainers then the right radiator air deflector. The a/c system discharge process is not mandatory for this repair work. Remove the compressor mounting bolts before pulling out the compressor from the engine bay with the compressor line attached but take out the three adjustable dowels from the universal spanner wrench (J 37872) and replace them instead with three 5/16 x 1 inch bolts. The compressor clutch plate bolt must be discarded then hold the compressor clutch plate using the universal spanner wrench (J 37872). Start by using snap ring pliers (J 6083) to separate the compressor pulley snap ring followed by removing the pulley. Precise removal of the compressor clutch coil starts with snap ring pliers (J 6083) that remove the coil's snap ring. Clean m6x1.0 threads on the clutch plate bolt before installing and blow out remaining debris using compressed air. Follow the snap ring pliers (J 6083) procedure to install both the compressor clutch coil with its snap ring and then place the compressor pulley with its snap ring. Apply oil on the 0.4 mm (0.016 in) air gap shim and insert it into the drive plate clutch before installing the compressor clutch plate. Rotate the drive plate without pulley contact to measure the pulley-to-drive plate air gap before applying shims to reach a 0.3-0.6 mm (0.012-0.024 in) desired gap. Use the universal spanner wrench (J 37872) to set the clutch drive plate bolt torque at 12 n.m (106 lb in) while holding the compressor clutch plate. Install the new clutch drive plate bolt only on threads with colored adhesive after ensuring it has five threads minimum. Reposition the compressor onto the engine with compressor mounting bolts torqued to 37 lb ft while ensuring correct installation of radiator air deflectors preserves the original a/c and engine cooling performance. Complete the process by placing back the right radiator air deflector with retainers and installing the right front fender liner before lowering the vehicle and installing the engine Drive Belt.
