2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: When servicing the powertrain control module (PCM) owners have two service options between pcm replacement or eeprom electrically erasable programmable read-only memory programming. The replacement part must match the specifications before any removal occurs. Preventing internal pcm damage requires keeping the Ignition Switch off during every power connection and disconnection process. Examine every surface of the pcm connector for debris while verifying that the pcm module connector has properly installed gasket to stop contaminant entry. The new pcm requires programming as its installation process. A scan tool should first retrieve engine oil life percentage data after which your records will display default values when your car reaches 5000 km (3,000 mi) following the last oil change. Failure to program this information will result in a 100% default causing an immediate oil change at 5000 km (3,000 mi). Isolating the negative Battery Cable before you start to free the pcm mounting tabs then remove the pcm cover from its place. The user should first turn off the ignition before disconnecting pcm electrical connectors by loosening the bolts on their connectors. The pcm may be removed once you release the spring latch and mounting tabs. Following these steps, connect the electrical connectors of the new pcm by first secure the spring latch and engage the mounting tabs. Secure the pcm electrical connectors with torques of 8 n.m (71 lb in) before placing the pcm cover with its tabs correctly extended and program the pcm when installing a new pcm.
