2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: Replacement or programming of the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) stands as the service method for the powertrain control module (PCM). Check the part compatibility before disassembling the system. Switching off the ignition prevents pcm internal damage when working with power connections or disconnections. Start the pcm service by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable after which you should release the mounting tabs from the pcm cover and then remove the cover. The two pcm electrical connector bolts should be loosened while disconnecting the electrical connectors followed by releasing the spring latch and mounting tabs to take out the pcm. You should engage the mounting tabs of the new pcm then lock the spring latch followed by connecting electrical connectors before torquing the bolts to 8 n.m (71 lb in). Fitting the pcm cover requires proper engagement of the mounting tabs. A new pcm needs programming through the service programming system followed by performing the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure. If necessary, reset the engine oil life monitor.
