2005 Chevrolet Uplander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Tools Are Required for Replacing the Front Wheel Drive Shaft Inner CV Joint and Seal on 2005 Chevrolet Uplander?
A: The necessary equipment for front wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement includes several tools must be used to perform the replacement: snap ring pliers-parallel jaw (J 8059) and drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) with matching drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). Snap ring pliers-parallel jaw (J 8059), drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910), and drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). Start by using a hand grinder to detach the swage ring from the halfshaft bar but make sure not to harm the halfshaft bar structure. Discard the large seal retaining clamp from the tripot joint after using side cutters to remove it. Free the inboard seal from its trilobal tripot bushing position while sliding it along the halfshaft bar. Extract the housing, tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar from the assembly sequence followed by using snap ring pliers (J 8059) to remove both spacer rings and spider assembly. Throw out the boot and rings before moving forward with installation. A wire brush removes rust from the halfshaft bar before checking the needle rollers and needle bearings and trunnion for damage which requires replacement of defective components. In order to install proceed by placing the new small swage ring onto the joint seal while sliding it onto the halfshaft bar until the joint seal finds its correct position. Mount the drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048) inside a vise before aligning the halfshaft assembly and tightening each bolt until just snug. Perform this sequence from one bolt to the next. Apply snap ring pliers (J 8059) to find the groove on the halfshaft bar, then position the spacer ring. Afterward use the tool to move the tripot joint spider assembly toward the spacer ring. Fill the housing with grease while maintaining a flat position for the trilobal tripot bushing in relation to the housing face. First, install the larger new seal retaining clamp correctly on the halfshaft inboard seal then move the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly while confirming the halfshaft inboard seal maintains its proper shape. Drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) should be used along with the specified torque to crimp the large seal retaining clamp over the halfshaft inboard seal and tripot housing. Check the clamp ear gap dimension before finishing joint assembly by completing multiple complete strokes with the joint.
