  • Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on 2006 Chevrolet Uplander?
    A: There are the necessary tools to replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal. These include: j 41048 drive axle swage ring clamp; j 8059 snap ring pliers; j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers. Start by unscrewing the large seal retaining clamp at CV Joint using a side cutter and get rid of it. An attempt should be made to avoid cutting off the wheel drive shaft inboard seal to prevent effecting the sealing surface. Use a hand grinder to cut past the swage ring for removal. Isolate the halfshaft side outboard shield from the CV Joint outside crown and slide the shield away from the joint down the halfshaft bar. Using the j 8059, clean the CV Joint inner race, spreading the ears of the race retaining ring. Take out CV Joint assembly from halfshaft bar and dispose of the old outboard seal. Use brass drift and hammer to tilt the CV Joint cage and throw off all the six chrome alloy balls. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, CV Joint cage, and chrome alloy balls with cleaning solvent and dry all parts then see any abnormal wear, cracks or damage and replace the parts. Clean up the remainder of the halfshaft bar with a wire brush in order to remove rust from the seal mounting area. In assembly, put on a new swage ring or eared clamp onto the outboard seal's neck without swaging or crimping it. Position the outboard seal onto the halfshaft bar and slide it into the seal groove. For swage ring installation use j41048 to bring to bear and clamp the swage ring while ensuring there are no deformities, re-swaged if need be. For eared clamp installation, in a vise mount the halfshaft and install the new eared clamp and crank in using l 35910, breaker bar, and torque wrench r 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.). Mount the inner race into the cage by aligning it with the outer race making sure the retaining ring side of inner race is up to the halfshaft bar. Put the chrome balls, dip the CV Joint with grease, and force the CV Joint onto the halfshaft bar till the retaining ring seats. Make sure that the outboard seal is shaped and then slide the large diameter of the outboard seal over the CV Joint outer race and then crimp the seal retaining clamp using the j 35910 to 174 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) while checking the gap dimension on the clamp ear until it becomes 1.9mm (5/64 inch).
