2005 GMC Sierra 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on the 1500 Series w/NYS and 25/3500 Series on 2005 GMC Sierra 3500?
A: Check the brake master cylinder fluid level for the 1500 series w/nys and 25/3500 series before starting Brake Pad replacement. Check the brake fluid level between its maximum and minimum points; no fluid removal is required at the midpoint but additional fluid must be drained down to the midpoint if the reservoir shows higher fluid levels. Use two large c-clamps to press the caliper pistons while keeping them against the outboard pad behind the caliper housing until the pistons are fully compressed. When you remove the c-clamp from the caliper support you should detach the caliper receptacle bolts then remove the caliper from the bracket while supporting it with heavy mechanic's wire that leaves the hydraulic brake hose intact. Detach brake pads while throwing away anti-rattle clips and check both caliper and caliper bracket for problems. First install new anti-rattle clips onto the caliper bracket after which you must install brake pads and reconnect the caliper to the bracket by tightening its bolts to 108 nm (80 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the tire with wheel assembly while taking away safety stands until the vehicle is at lower ground level. Use the engine's off-state to apply the brake pedal to 2/3 of its distance followed by its gradual release. Seating the caliper pistons and pads requires a repetition of the 15-second practice until reaching a firm pedal. Burnishing pads and rotors should be your final step before filling the master cylinder reservoir with clean fluid until it reaches proper level.
