2006 Buick LaCrosse Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering shaft, lower bearing, and jacket on 2006 Buick LaCrosse?
A: Surface all parts for a new Steering Shaft mount that will require the ignition lock cylinder case and tilt spring and automatic transmission shift lock control components to be removed initially. A screwdriver should be used to remove the automatic transmission shift lock control from the Steering Column jacket assembly. After prying it out you can take the three flat-head 6-lobed socket tapping screws and the linear shift assembly. Start by separating the Steering Shaft assembly pieces such as Steering Shaft seal , sensor retainer , lower spring retainer , lower bearing spring , lower bearing seat , and adapter and bearing assembly . Dispose of the lower spring retainer. The j 21854-01 pivot pin remover will remove both pivot pins located within the Steering Column support assembly. Once you mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly for future reassembly, take out the Steering Shaft assembly from the Steering Column tilt head assembly. The race and upper shaft assembly receives a 90-degree tilt to separate from the lower shaft assembly; you can discard the former centering sphere and spring when required. Set the race and upper shaft assembly inside the j 41688 centering sphere installer tool before turning the driver 90 degrees counterclockwise to release the centering sphere. Extract the shaft preload spring and centering sphere from the tool. Uninstall four torx screws from the Steering Column support assembly while discarding the removed hardware. Inspection of the Steering Column happens after the Steering Column support assembly is detached from the Steering Column jacket assembly . After placing the new Steering Column support assembly on the Steering Column jacket assembly you should secure the four new Steering Column support torx screws with 17 nm (13 ft. Lbs.) torque force. Using gm p/n 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) lubricate the centering sphere after placing it and the joint preload spring inside the j 41688 tool. Then apply pressure to the arms to lock the positioning sphere into place. Set the race and upper shaft assembly inside the tool before conducting a 90-degree shaft rotation and removing the setup. Apply gm p/n 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) lubricant to the centering sphere and join the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly. First fit the Steering Shaft assembly into the Steering Column tilt head assembly and next establish the tilt head assembly to the Steering Column jacket assembly. Attach two pivot pins to their designated spots. First reattach the adapter and bearing assembly followed by the lower bearing seat then the lower bearing spring and lower spring retainer the sensor retainer alongside the Steering Shaft seal to the Steering Shaft assembly. Install the linear shift assembly while securing it with three flat-head 6-lobed socket tapping screws that require 10 nm of torque (89 inch lbs.). The automatic transmission shift lock control needs to be reinstalled here but only after performing any necessary adjustments and completing assembly by inserting the tilt spring assembly and ignition lock cylinder case.
