• Q: How to replace the rear drive shaft in an AWD on 2006 Cadillac SRX?

  A: A mechanic must first support and raise the vehicle before taking out the exhaust system for rear propeller shaft replacement in awd vehicles. A suitable jack should support the propeller shaft near the support bearing before uninstalling the bolts that secure the heat shield to the vehicle underbody and then the bolts that anchor the support bearing. First note the proper alignment of the propeller shaft CV Joint with the transfer case flange before removing the CV Joint to transfer case flange bolts. After attaching the differential flange to the rear propeller shaft coupler users should push the shaft backward to connect it with the transfer case flange. Before installing used nuts and bolts users must clean their threads with denatured alcohol while applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) which needs 10 minutes of curing time. First install the coupler-to-differential flange washers and bolts with a 85 nm (63 ft. Lbs.) torque setting, afterward tighten the CV Joint to transfer case flange bolts sequentially according to their order (1-6) to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). First mount the center support bearing onto the vehicle understructure then raise the support mechanism for positioning and torque the support bearing bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Install the heat shield bolts followed by tightening them to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Remove the support device and then reinstall the exhaust system before lowering the vehicle.
