- Q: How to replace the outer CV joint and seal of the rear wheel drive shaft on 2006 Cadillac SRX?A: To replace the outer joint and seal of the rear wheel drive shaft, you will need to have following tools: drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572). Start by unscrewing the wheel drive shaft from the automobile and wrapping a shop towel around the Axle Shaft. Fix the wheel drive shaft horizontally in a bench vise. Remove and dispose of the seal retaining clamps, small and large, using a side cutter or appropriate tool. Remove the seal from joint outer race at the larger diameter end and slide it away from the joint face. Clean the grease from the inner race of the joint, cage and balls, then remove the Axle Shaft outer joint by holding the inner race of the said joint horizontally placing a brass drift on the inner race and hit the drift with hammer to compress the Axle Shaft retaining clip. Push out the Axle Shaft retaining ring and remove the seal from the Axle Shaft. You should clean all the parts with a solvent and check them for damage and then reassemble the new parts by aligning the cage with the larger radius corners facing up and biting in the inner race. Make sure that the inner race is completely inserted into cage, covering the splined shaft outer race with shop towel and fixed in the bench vise vertically. Align the cage and inner race with outer race making sure that the inner race ring groove is at the lower position. Mount the balls one by one, without leaving any space between the balls and the inner race ball track, and supply about 60 percent of the grease of the service kit into the outside joint. Following the installation of the new small seal retaining clamp onto the Axle Shaft and the seal, install a new retaining ring and lock the inner race splines onto the Axle Shaft splines. Compress the Axle Shaft ring spacer and mount the inner joint onto the shaft using a wood block and hammer until it is fully mounted. Put the rest of the grease inside the seal and crimp small and large seal retaining clamp using the drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572) to a gap of 1mm (0.039 inch) for at least 2 seconds. Lastly, check the outer joint for good operation by rotating the wheel drive shaft multiple times before replacing it.
