- Q: How to replace the front (left) inner CV Joint and seal of the wheel drive shaft on 2005 Cadillac SRX?A: Start inner joint and seal replacement of front left wheel drive shaft by collecting these tools: Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) and Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). You will need Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) and Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) with Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) for this job. Place a shop towel around the wheel drive shaft bar before mounting it horizontally in a bench vise. You should use side cutters to remove the small seal clamp and throw it away. While gripping the seal retaining clamp with the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566), remove the large clamp from the tripot joint position. The inboard seal must be separated from the trilobal tripot bushing so you can move it out of the joint area. Use Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to remove the old retaining rings while you separate the tripot joint spider from the wheel drive shaft bar. Add the removed parts to waste. Before dismantling the wheel drive shaft bar record the tripot spider's position afterward strike it with a brass drift and hammer to remove the tripot spider. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal along with the tripot joint spider assembly and housing as well as the trilobal tripot bushing for signs of damage. During assembly place a new small seal clamp onto the small end of the inner joint seal before you slide it into the boot groove then position it in the inner joint seal groove on the wheel drive shaft bar. Use Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) to crimp the small seal retaining clamp but avoid excessive tightness or loose fit while maintaining a 1 mm (0.039 inch) space at the omega shape base. For the reinstallation of an older tripot spider align its reference mark toward the wheel drive shaft bar so its beveled side remains facing the bar. Use Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to install the new retaining ring on the wheel drive shaft bar while checking that the tripot spider operates correctly. Use half of the grease in the service kit to fill the wheel drive shaft inboard seal before distributing the rest into the housing. Mount the housing to the tripot bushing before sliding in the larger new retaining clamp across the wheel drive shaft inboard seal. Then move the housing over the tripot spider assembly. Position the joint assembly to the given vehicle dimension while checking that the seal edges measure 104.7 mm (4.12 inch). Burst air from the internal joint seal during retaining clamp latching and verify the seal, tripot housing, and large clamp retain a correct alignment. Use the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) to secure the large seal retaining clamp followed by rotating the inner tripot housing several times with the tool to spread the grease to tripot spider bearings.
